The Effects of Dancing on the Brain

During my time with the special ed. students at GVHS, I was able to connect my profound interest in the field of neuroscience with dancing’s effect on peoples’ brains. Through my research, I discovered that dancing stimulates cognitive processes such as attention, memory consolidation, and sequencing, which are often challenging for individuals with special needs. Memorizing steps and performing them synchronized with the rhythm of music engages key brain areas, including the prefrontal cortex, cerebellum, and hippocampus. Beyond these cognitive attributes, dancing also provides both physical and emotional benefits, addressing many common challenges faced by people with special needs. Dance therapy holds immense value, not just for individuals with special needs, but for enhancing the well-being/health of all people.
